The Important Ones (if you read nothing else, read these)
Wheaton's Law - Don't be a dick. We're here to have fun. Don't do anything that'll ruin someone else's fun.
No Cheating - No x-ray, no seed-sniping (finding the world seed, creating a SP world, finding the goodies, then going right to them in the server), no glitches, no dupes. If you find something you think is not working as intended, report it, don't abuse it.
Do, Then Ask - If a moderator tells you do to something (or stop doing something), listen to them immediately. If you have questions as to why, you can ask them once you've listened. If you don't agree with it, you can talk to an admin for a ruling, but bear in mind that 99% of the time we're going to side with our moderators. We picked them for a reason, after all.
Do Not Pump The Nether - This is self-explanatory. It's a server tradition, and will not be tolerated. It is perfectly acceptable to pump lava from anywhere else (within the rules for automated gathering, of course), including lava dimensions, but not the Nether. This rule has been overturned. Server and mod stability make this a non-issue, so long as you do it reasonably. See rule number 7, Thou Shalt Not Lag.
Respect Your Neighbors - If you can see a player-built structure on your minimap, you're too close to them, do not build there. Give your neighbors plenty of room to build and expand. There's no shortage of land.
Do Not Unnecessarily Wander - There's no explicit rules on how far away from spawn you are allowed to build. But the larger the map, the more the server lags, so do you REALLY need to be 100k blocks out? No. Try to stay within reasonable proximity to spawn.
Thou Shalt Not Lag - Don't do anything that you know creates lag. Massive amounts of mob spawns, super complex machinery, dumping tons of entities into the world, etc.
The Administration Reserves The Right To Destroy Anything, With Or Without Notice - If something you build is determined to be causing problems on the server, you will be asked to remove it. If it's an immediate threat to server stability, or you refuse to do so, we will do it for you, and we may not reimburse you if you violated rule 1.
The Rule Of Exceptions To The Rule - Occasionally, we may consider exceptions to the rules, most notably the building rules. This is always handled by staff members, and is on a case-by-case basis. Do not assume that if we allow an exception for one person, we will allow it for everyone.
Staff Are Players Too - Remember that moderators and admins want to play too, and that we sometimes don't get a lot of time to do that because we're handling official business on the server. As a result, moderation staff are permitted to use their moderation abilities (flight, teleports, etc.) occasionally to help them out. That's part of their payment for working for free to keep things running for you.
Chat Rules
English only. Small bits of other languages that are part of common parlance may be acceptable, but your primary communication should be in English. If we feel like we have to load up Google Translate to figure out if you're causing trouble or not, we're probably just going to err on the side of caution and boot you.
We are most certainly NOT a PG rated community. Expect swearing, both ingame and on voice communication programs. Occasionally excessive swearing. Sometimes very inventive swearing. Direct harassment of others is not tolerated, however (jokes are one thing, flat out harassing other people is another, know where to draw the line)
It should not need to be said in mature company, but any sexual harassment of any member of the community (female, male, gay, straight, bi, pan, trans, what the fuck ever) will be treated as griefing (see the section on griefing) if you are asked to stop and continue to harass them.
We are primarily a politics and religion free zone. These two topics in particular tend to cause massive amounts of arguments when debated indepth. If you choose to bring up a political or religious subject, please be respectful of the opinions and beliefs of others. If an argument begins to get heated, step away.
If on voice chat (Teamspeak, or another ingame chat method) with members, mind your mic. Don't leave your mic open with a lot of background noise going on. If people complain about your background noise, change to push-to-talk or mute your mic entirely.
Building Rules
Mob spawners - Only one hostile mob spawner may be running per group at any given time. Additionally, if available, one passive mob spawner for each type of passive mob may be running as well, as long as they are killed and collected fast enough that it doesn't cause lag. Note that a dark room is considered a mob spawner for the purposes of this rule, so you can't have a dark room and a powered spawner, for example.
If you choose to build in a village, you cannot completely block access to the villagers. Other players must have the ability to trade with them. However, the villagers are considered your "pets" for the purposes of people wantonly killing them (see PvP rules)
You may only claim one of a certain type of natural resource structure at a time...oil wells, volcanos, etc.
Any power generation equipment must be used in the Overworld. This means no putting solar panels in infinite day dimensions to generate power 24/7, or avoiding rain by putting it in a no weather dimension, etc.
Automated mining/gathering/pumping methods may only be used in the following locations:
1) Within close proximity to your own base. If you can see your base on the minimap, you're probably OK, because nobody should be building that close to you anyway.
2) Within an alternate dimension that YOU created.
3) Within the established mining world.
4) Within the End, but away from the main islands (So using a quarry or a digital miner on a draconium comet is acceptable)
Any machinery you build must be leak-proof. This means that under no circumstances will a machine ever drop entities on the ground, even if it fills up, loses power, etc.
Any machinery that has potential negative side effects must be shielded as well as possible, in case of cataclysmic failure. Granted, nothing's going to stop a Draconic Evolution reactor explosion, but...
PvP Rules
Gult's Gorge is a no-PvP server, by default. Just because PvP is enabled does not give you the right to attack others.
PvP combat is ONLY permitted in the following situations:
1) A friendly, agreed upon duel
2) Jokes between friends (careful though, if your friend gets annoyed, you can be punished for continuing...)
3) In defense of your property against thieves or griefers. You must warn them prior to acting, and you should try to get a staff member to help you first. As a last resort, you may use lethal force.
Lethal traps ARE PERMITTED...let me repeat that: ARE PERMITTED, under the following circumstances:
1) You MUST placard the perimeter of your base with signs indicating that your base is trapped.
2) The perimeter MUST consist of some sort of red block, to act as a warning sign from the air if people are flying over.
3) There must be no way to access your base that will not take someone reasonably close to a warning sign (except for griefy methods like tunneling under your base). This means, for example, if you have an RFTools matter receiver, you must place a warning sign near it, since that is a means of access from outside.
Killing other people's pets is strictly forbidden, and counted as griefing (see the section on griefing).
Griefing
Gult's Gorge has a zero tolerance policy on griefing. This means that you will be banned on a FIRST OFFENSE if you are caught griefing. Griefing is engaging in any of the following acts:
1) Destroying other people's property
2) Taking other people's property without their permission
3) Sabotaging other people's bases
4) Killing other people's pets (villagers living inside their base count as pets!)
5) Repeatedly attacking other people outside of the PvP rules
6) Pouring lava, water, or other liquids in other people's bases (or ANYWHERE, unless there is a reason beyond causing lag and annoying people)
7) Intentionally setting forest fires (except on your own property, even there it's frowned upon due to lag)
8) Excessive harassment in chat, whether it be ingame or by another means (Teamspeak, Steam messages, etc.)
9) "Fair Weather Friending" (joining someone's group for the explicit purpose of griefing them, and then leaving the group)
10) ANY action taken against another player that is deemed by staff members to be a gross violation of Wheaton's Law. This list is not all-inclusive, people find new ways to be dicks all the time.
Conclusion
As stated in the beginning of the rules, we all just want to have fun playing together here. Try to be respectful of other people, don't build gigantic lag factories, and follow the building rules, and you shouldn't have much trouble. We try to be as laid back as possible, but we will put our foot down if called upon to do so.
Thank you for playing on Gult's Gorge!
